Summer camps at Asheville Junior Theater are a great way for kids to try acting, singing or dancing. Whether it’s to improve their talents in preparation for our fall show, or to simply join us for some summer fun, your junior actor is welcome here!

FULL payment for summer camp is due upon registration. This includes a non-refundable $100 deposit. If you do not pay in FULL, we cannot hold a spot for your child.

Each camp has a minimum requirement of ten kids. We reserve the right to cancel and refund you if these minimums are not met.

TECH camp! Just added to Witches of Oz

Location:  South Asheville

      • Synopsis: Have you ever wondered what goes on backstage? Are you more interested in the creative design than performing? This camp is for you! Through hands-on exploration of lighting, sound, scenic and costumes these students will collaborate with the Witches of Oz musical theatre camp. 
      • The campers of the AJT technical theatre camp will learn the basics of designing and operating all show elements. Each day of the week will focus on a different technical element including Lighting, Sound, Scenic, and Costumes culminating in the chance to specialize in one element.
      • Campers will learn the value of artistic collaboration, effective visioning, and communication.  
      • Campers will challenge their unique solutions and problem solving skills while exercising creativity.

      • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday. Wear comfortable clothes for painting and moving. 
      • We are thrilled to have Cass Opal teaching this camp, formerly the Production Manager and Lighting Engineer from Wortham Center for the Arts, and the current Production Manager for The School of Stage and Screen at Western Carolina University! She is an expert in the field and we are so excited to have her knowledge!

    Moana 2

    AGES 8-18

    July 7-11, 2025

    Location:  South Asheville

    • Campers will learn choreography, songs and scenes based both on the hit film, Moana, and its 2024 sequel. Set three years after the first Moana, the sequel follows the titular character reuniting with the demigod Maui and assembling a wayfinding crew in order to find the lost island of Motufetu, break its curse, and reconnect the people of the ocean.
    • This camp will focus on singing, dancing and scenes from Moana 2.
    • This camp aims to help kids gain confidence on the stage in a fun and nurturing environment. 
    • Kids will also spend time making props for Friday’s showcase.
    • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday. Wear comfortable clothes for dancing and painting. 
    • A mini performance on Friday will allow kids to show their parents what they have been working on all week. This is NOT a full show, but instead a 30-minute showcase of what the children worked on all week. This showcase will begin Friday at 2:00pm.
    • *If possible, it helps if the campers listen to the soundtrack and watch the movie ahead of time. 
    • Campers will mostly do activities separate from the younger kids in Moana 2 – Minis camp, but there will be some overlap.

    Newsboys/girls unite!

    •  This camp will explore choreography, music and scenes as we uncover the strength that young people have when they join together and stand up against injustice. Newsboys and Newsgirls unite in this epic summer camp!
    • This camp will be taught by AJT’s Director of Dance, Jarret Ditch. Expect fun choreography and dazzling songs inspired by late 1800s New York City newsboy strikes. 
    • This camp aims to help kids gain confidence on stage. 
    • Kids will also spend time making props for the showcase on Friday. 
    • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday.
    • A mini performance on Friday will allow kids to show their parents what they have been working on all week. This is NOT a full show, but instead a 30-minute showcase of what the children worked on all week. This showcase will begin Friday at 2:00pm. 

    WItches of oz, Week 3

    AGES 8-18

    July 21-25

    9:00am-4:00pm

    Location:  South Asheville

      • Campers will focus on learning choreography inspired by the iconic book, exploring themes of love, conflicting viewpoints, and ultimately tragedy. Also, this camp will focus on singing technique, the importance of projection and exploring one’s belt voice versus head voice. Camp will be led by two amazing AJT directors….  a choreographer to teach movement and dance numbers and another director to head up singing and acting.
      •  This camp aims to help kids gain confidence on the stage.
      • Campers will also spend time making props/sets.
      • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday. Wear comfortable clothes for dancing and painting.

      • A performance on Friday will allow kids to show their parents what they worked on over two weeks. This is NOT a full show.
      • If possible, it helps if the campers familiarize themselves by learning about the Witches of Oz and listening to the soundtrack. 

    Dog Man The Musical

    AGES 8-18

    • Dog Man: The Musical is both a popular Broadway touring production and a soon-to-be popular motion picture based on the worldwide bestselling series from Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants.
    • Best buds George and Harold have been creating comics for years, but now that they’re in 5th grade, they figure it’s time to level up and write a musical based on their favorite character, Dog Man, the crime-biting sensation who is part dog, part man, and ALL HERO!! How hard could it be?
    • This camp explores the inventive, hysterical heartwarming show that is currently touring nationally. Plus, the Dog Man the Movie is coming to theaters January 31, 2025 and is guaranteed to keep kids riveted in their seats! Watch out as the Dog Man phenomenon spreads across popular culture! 
    • Kids will learn how to entertain their audience, sing many of the adorable and catchy songs from the musical and work on gaining confidence and experience as an actor. Embodying animals is a great way to challenge one’s acting chops!
    • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday.
    • A mini performance on Friday will allow kids to show their parents what they have been working on all week. This is NOT a full show, but instead a 30-minute showcase of what the children worked on all week. This showcase will begin Friday at 2:00pm.

    Taylor Swift Eras tour

    AGES 8-18
    August 4-8, 2025

    • Campers will learn songs from the 2023 The Eras Tour, which paid homage to Taylor Swift’s 10-album discography with 151 shows across five continents. The Eras Tours, Swift’s most expansive tour yet, is the highest grossing tour of all time and the first to surpass $1 Billion in revenue. 
    • This camp will focus on singing technique, memorizing songs and learning the difference between performances for musical theater and for a concert. 
    • Kids will work on confidence and poise as they embody their inner rockstar!
    • This camp will be taught by AJT’s Musical Director, Melena Dillingham.
    • In addition to Swiftie crafts and games, kids will also spend time making props for Friday’s showcase. 
    • Please bring a snack, a large water bottle or two and a lunch everyday.
    • A mini performance on Friday will allow kids to show their parents what they have been working on all week. This is NOT a full show, but instead a 30-minute showcase of what the children worked on all week. This showcase will begin Friday at 2:00pm.

      Ultimate Dance Camp

      • This is AJT’s first time ever doing a two-week camp. For those who only want to do one week, please register for Witches of Oz Week 1 only. But you must register for both weeks to be in the showcase at the end of the second week. We recommend registering for both to get the most out of the process.
